Meet Dominika

Founder of Döhm, integrative somatic practitioner

Grief hit me like a truck in my mid-twenties. I was in the middle of grad school and completely lost sight of myself. I lived in a constant fog of work, school, eat, repeat. At some point I looked around and noticed the relationships that I once held close were slipping through the cracks if they hadn’t already disappeared. I knew something had to change.

I tried escaping it. Distracting myself with constant activity, learning without applying, and isolating myself. I tried the traditional methods. I talked about it, wrote about it, and cried about it. At the end of it all, I still felt empty, lost and numb.

That all changed when I discovered somatic therapy. All this time I was looking outward for someone to hold my emotions; they felt too big to hold myself. Somatic therapy flipped this narrative and challenged me to look inward in a way that finally felt natural. I learned to put what was happening in my body, right in front of me. Through this, I discovered that I had the answers all along. By giving my body the space it needed, I was able to release stored emotions and unravel decades of past stories and old memories that no longer served me.

I shed these past truths and found new ways to integrate myself into a loving community, express my queerness authentically and devote myself to something bigger. For the first time in my life I stopped questioning whether I was “too much” or “not enough”. I stopped feeling out of place in my community. I started to feel loved, present, and truly welcomed.

This journey had such a tremendous impact on my life that I devoted myself to help others heal too. If somatic therapy could have such a profound effect on my system, then surely it can help you as well.

After years of studying, practicing, and one-on-one mentorship… the chrysalis cracked open, wings were spread and döhm was born.

Somatic therapy is a body-centered therapeutic approach that helps individuals process trauma and stress by primarily focusing on bodily sensations and the mind-body connection. It engages the body to help regulate the nervous system, release tension and promote healing. The word “somatic” originates from the Greek language meaning “of the body”, derived from “soma” which broadly means, “body”.

Somatic therapy operates on the principle that traumatic experiences can create dysregulation in the nervous system. This can lead to symptoms including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, chronic pain, insomnia, digestive upset, relationship issues or feeling disconnected from oneself.

During a session, we explore the story behind the emotion, and then dive deeper into the body to process it with ease. We guide clients to:

  • Notice bodily sensations
  • Observe environmental stimuli
  • Understand body position and movement

The body is our wisest tool. Most often than not, it tells us what we need to know.

Common techniques we use in our sessions include:

  • Body awareness and scanning exercises
  • Breathwork
  • Mindful movement (gentle yoga poses or stretching)
  • Expressive arts (drawing, writing or dancing to process emotions)

We have paper, drawing tools, soft pillows and fidget toys available in sessions.

A somatic session can involve sitting, standing or gentle yoga poses, depending on the topic of the session and your needs. Bring yourself, an open-mind, and a journal if you desire. Please turn your phone off during our session to avoid interruptions. I invite you to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will find I am wearing something similar!

Somatic therapy can be used for anyone. Currently, Dominika is trained and accepts clients that are adults (18+ years of age). Somatic therapy can also be useful for young adults (ages 12-17) who have experienced traumatic events. Dominika is working on receiving certifications in developmental psychology to provide therapies for young clients.

We accept several forms of payment including e-transfer, cash, VISA credit and debit. Credit and debit transactions will be subject to a $3.15 service fee.

Our virtual and in-person sessions are located at 400 Chilver Road, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Bathrooms are available in the building in case you need to change clothing or need a break during our session. My office is located on the second floor and is only accessible with stairs.

For virtual sessions, a zoom link will be sent to your e-mail address prior to each session.

During our sessions, I aim to use simple language without the use of acronyms. I can speak in both English and Polish fluently, and have minor knowledge of American Sign Language.

My office is located in a building that is not wheel-chair accessible. If you require other accommodations for an in-person location, please e-mail hello@dohmsoma.com and we will happily assist you.
